Martin helps senior executives and emerging leaders who face complex challenges. Sceptical of unrealistic goals, he encourages leaders to focus on being the best they can be given the reality of their situation. He brings a facility to hold strategic and systemic considerations while digging deep on salient matters. He draws on inquiry skills honed in journalism, coaching and strategy development and a career-long interest in the role of organisations in society.
Martin creates a reflective space in which he encourages clients to connect with their values, understand their networks and foster equanimity about the inevitable compromises of organisational life. This enables people to be more aware of their influence and to exercise leadership effectively and ethically. Typical issues include: stepping up to challenging roles; making an impact amid rapid change; making wise judgments when others are floundering. People appreciate the openness and candour that Martin brings and the sensitivity with which he enables people to face up to difficult issues.
Martin has particular experience of working with board level leaders in the media, higher education and the cultural sector. Media clients include the BBC, Telegraph Media Group and Time Inc. UK. Higher education clients include King’s College London, Leeds University and Ravensbourne. Martin has coached senior professionals in a wide range of cultural organisations including the British Library, Tate, Almeida Theatre, Manchester City Galleries and Dundee Contemporary Arts.
Prior to founding Vogel Wakefield with Mark Wakefield, Martin ran his own consultancy practice with clients ranging from start-ups and SMEs, through NGOs such as Amnesty International and Action Aid, to large corporations including Amgen, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and media clients overseas. He has also worked with senior leaders in local government in the London boroughs of Camden and Kensington and Chelsea.
Martin has particular experience of working with people leading creative teams. He worked for 20 years in broadcasting, mainly in the BBC. Beginning as a reporter and news producer, he moved into strategy and digital media development and became an internal leadership coach. As senior advisor at the BBC Trust, he led the first public value tests, a radical and innovative approach to evaluating public investment decisions.
Personal development and accreditation
Martin gained a Master’s with distinction in coaching from Oxford Brookes University, where he developed a research interest in the influence of stories on our sense of self. He also has professional coaching qualifications from i-Coach Academy and the BBC’s coaching network and an MBA from the London Business School. He is a trained instructor in mindfulness meditation and is a licensed practitioner of the MBTI and FIRO-B psychometric instruments and is accredited in Analytic-Network coaching.
Martin is a member of the Association for Professional Executive Coaching and Supervision and subscribes to its code of ethics.
